Chemical: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate / Sodium Laureth Sulfate
Purpose: Acts as a foaming agent, a penetration enhancer
Product Use: Shampoo/conditioner, bar soap, body wash, face cleanser, liquid hand soap, acne treatment, hair dye, mascara, shaving products, moisturizer, toothpaste, sunscreen, make-up remover, perfume, and cologne
Health Concerns: A detergent that has been found to enter the brain, heart and liver and impairs the immune system. It also causes eye irritations and skin rashes. When mixed with other chemicals found in toiletries it can form cancer-causing compounds

Chemical: Petrolatum / Petroleum
Purpose: Forms a barrier on skin, making lipstick shine and creams smoother and skin softer
Product Use: Creams, lotions, wax depilatories, eyebrow pencils, eye shadow, liquid powder, lipstick, moisturizers, conditioners, and baby creams
Health Concerns: Linked to cancer, developmental and reproductive damage, immune system toxicity, endocrine disruption and neurotoxicity

Chemical: Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHA)
Purpose: Moisturizing ingredient, natural exfoliant
Product Use: Skin cleansers, masks, and moisturizers
Health Concerns: It can remove not just dead skin cells, but the skin’s natural protective layer as well. It can make the skin up to 50% more susceptible to harmful UV rays, leaving one vulnerable to the sun’s aging effect, and even skin cancer

Chemical: Propylene Glycol
Purpose: A penetration enhancer. Keeps products from melting in high heat or freezing
Product Use: Shampoo/conditioner, bar soap, body wash, face cleanser, liquid hand soap, acne treatment, hair dye, shaving products, moisturizer, make-up remover, toothpaste, sunscreen, perfume, cologne, deodorant, toner/astringent, foundation, bronzer powder, nail polish, lip products, eye shadow/pencil, and mascara
Health Concerns: Causes allergic reactions, and alters the structure of the skin by allowing chemicals to penetrate deep beneath it while increasing their ability to reach the blood stream. Linked to liver abnormalities and kidney damage, and is also a skin and eye irritant

Purpose: Makes products smell nice
Product Use: Personal care products, candles, incense
Health Concerns: Can be toxic or carcinogenic. Can affect the central nervous system, causing depression, hyperactivity and irritability

Chemical: Toluene
Purpose: A solvent that improves adhesion and gloss

Also contains possible gastrointestinal, liver, kidney, and blood toxins. Harmful for inhalation and for the respiratory tract

Chemical: Parabens
Purpose: Prevent bacteria, yeast and mold formations
Product Use: Moisturizers, shampoos/conditioners, hair styling gel, nail creams, foundations, facial masks, skin creams, deodorants, and baby lotions
Health Concerns: May impair fertility, alter hormone levels, increase risk for certain types of cancer, alter reproductive development, and cause skin irritation and rashes. Parabens have been found in breast tumors

Chemical: Lead

Health Concerns: Increase in blood pressure, can damage brain and kidneys, can cause weakness in fingers, wrists, and ankles, damage to sperm production, and can cause anemia
